Here is a comparison of D1 cameras VS Megapixel resolutions;

1.3MP = 3x 4CIF cameras
2MP = 5x 4CIF cameras
3MP = 8x 4CIF cameras
5MP = 12x 4CIF cameras

How we achieve this;

D1 = 720x576 = 414720 pixels
2MP = 1600x1200 = 1920000 pixels

So, 1920000 / 414720 = 4.6 (approx 5 D1 cameras)

So if a server can handle 40 D1 cameras, how many 2MP cameras can it handle?
40/5 = 8x 2MP cameras at 25FPS.

The calculation is almost this, but true, if you use motion detection will be something like this, really..
Megapixel cameras are terrible for processing, especially if using H.264
